Puukko Ahti – Finland

Puukko Ahti – Finland 1798 1200 Puukko - Finnish knives

Ahti offers several Finnish puukko models that will meet your needs for utility knife, hunting knife or general use while you enjoy outdoors.

Ahti knives are hand made in the Finnish town of Kauhava. It is the blacksmith Reino Kamppila and his family who make Ahti knives. Every Ahti knife is unique. The handles are in curly birch. The blades are made of vanadium steel-carbon high quality. Finnish traditions make Ahti Puukkos popular all over the world.

Puukko Ahti

Kauhava – Finland

The Ahti knives are made in Kauhava, Finland, which has a long and rich history of making knives.

The Ahti knives are made by Reino Kamppila and his son, who have been running a family-owned knife manufacturing company for four generations. Their workshop is small, but they produce knives of high quality. Steel blades carbon (0.8%) are soaked at about 59 on the Rockwell scale. The knives with stainless steel blades are soaked at approximately 57 on the Rockwell scale. The knives and their leather cases are genuine works of art, visually attractive and functionally satisfactory.

As with most Scandinavian knives, the handles are in curly birch, sanded and tinted. The clamps of the knives are made of polished brass and the cases have plastic inserts to protect at the same time sheath And the hand. These knives are sharp enough and could easily slice the two if they were not inserted correctly in the sheath. Belt passers-bys are not attached directly to the sheaths, but rather by a small metal ring, which allows the sheath hang and rotate to facilitate the movement and position of the knife to the belt. The Ahti knives are also equipped with a classic Scandinavian sharpening blade and are ideal for bushcraft and other outdoor activities.

Reino Kamppila & his son

Over the years, Ahti knives have been produced in the Kamppila knife shop. So many people wanted a model of this knife representing the majesty of nature not only in their own country, but also in Sweden, Russia, the United States and Germany. At first, the Ahti knives were born in Reino's hands. For fifteen years he has been making them with his son, the master cutler Janne Kamppila. Traditional crafts have thus been passed on to the family to the fourth generation, as the saying says, as a legacy of blood.

Each Ahti knife is unique and handmade.

Ahti knives have a personality!

This design, which successfully combines comfort and beauty, is a feature of Ahti knives throughout the collection.

The spirit of Puukko

No wonder so many people wanted to experience this wild atmosphere. Watch a knife with a black side on the blade and tighten its handle in his hand: that's what I want.

Reino and Janne Kamppila found inspiration for the design and colours of knives in the rugged and beautiful nature of Finland. Both love long journeys in the freedom of pure nature. This is exactly what the knife collection responds to in practice. Kamppila's Ahti knives smell like marsh bear moss, the barking of a hunting dog and the splashing of a prey fish jumping at the end of a fishing line.

A good knife lasts even longer if it is well maintained.

That's why you need to take care of the knife. After use, the knife is dried and cleaned properly. It is good to protect steel at the carbon rust by oiling it, for example, with unsalted cooking oil. A blunt blade must also be sharpened, as you cannot do anything properly with a blunt knife. However, you should be careful when sharpening, because if the blade corner is not sharpened correctly, the knife will no longer cut well enough. The blade of the knife must always be sharpened evenly and at the angle of the knife sharpening that the knife had when it was new. Finally, the leather sheath must also be treated with a suitable leather care product, as dirt is not easily absorbed by the treated leather.

A little more about the company Iisakki Järvenpää Finland.

Mr Iisakki Järvenpää was born on 7 January 1859 and died on 6 March 1929. Several generations have ensured the continuity of know-how.

For 140 years, this company has been standing in the centre of Kauhava next to the town hall and is today the museum of the house of Iisakki Järvenpää. Originally, the building was much smaller and more modest, and simultaneously served as a factory and family residence from 1904 to 1921, then only as a residence. As a result, the factory and house were expanded several times until they reached a point with which they could no longer be expanded to meet the needs of the factory.

Iisakki Järvenpää

Materials, machinery and operating methods were established decades ago and there are no plans to amend them. For the handles of the puukkos, Iisakki Järvenpää mainly uses birch visa, which comes from central Finland. It is dried in a drying room at exactly the right moisture level for further treatment.

Each puukko is sanded individually with a strip sander up to its final shape. Each handle is sanded with abrasive bands of three different grains. The shape comes from the eye of the creator, hand-adapting and also adapting to the handle model. Sometimes handles must also be compared to those previously manufactured so that the shape and proportions do not change over time.

Iisakki Järvenpää still manufactures all its products by hand.

A little more on steel

The steel of the knife is refined precisely at the carbon and chrome desired. Until the 1980s, the blades were forged hot. However, the material was then e.g. old files and sometimes even in the past old horseshoes and sled legs. From 1922 onwards, Iisakki Järvenpää tried to increase the content of carbon striking them with a hammer-pilon. Today, the blades are already pressed from steel plate of a completely uniform quality and good alloy ratio. After that, the blade blanks are soaked and then faceted individually, each side of the blade separately with its own facet. Finally, the blades are still polished, most often a basic polishing. The final burst is obtained when the knife is assembled.

Leather of the sheaths

Iisakki Järvenpää also takes care of the sheaths for his puukkos. Leather comes from Kokkola in central Ostrobotnia or Tärnsjö in Sweden. Tanned leather gives the possibility to design and decorate the sheath with traditional working methods, which cannot be done with chrome tanned leather. Modeling and chining the sheaths are also done individually by hand on damp leather, most with a warm tool, but some also with a cold tool. All castings are made with a press and welded with tin.

Marttiini 245

Marttiini 245 1798 1200 Puukko - Finnish knives

The story of Marttiini begins in northern Finland, in Kierinki more precisely. Kierinki is a small village in the municipality of Sodankylä, well beyond the Arctic Circle. On May 2, 1893, a new child was born to the Marttiini family in Kierinki: Janne. At the time, no one knew, but Janne would continue to do a lot and create a whole legacy by doing so.

Lapon Made knife in Finland

Last week I stumbled into an auction site that presented this Finnish Marttiini brand knife. This isn't my first from Rovaniemi. I didn't miss the opportunity, especially for 40 euros with shipping costs. This Marttiini 245 was purchased in the 1980s. You feel that he has lived, but he does not have any particular abuse. I'd even say he's fit for a knife over 40 years old!

Really, when I say, by chanceThis is not entirely true. I am daily this auction site based in Sweden. There are often very interesting puukkos and sometimes good deals to do. Here is the link: tradera.com

Often they are individuals who find puukko sleeping in the bottom of a drawer. Or a collector who gets rid of a rare piece... My advice: Pay via Paypal so that, in case of a problem, you can get paid easily. Prices displayed in SEK (Swedish krona) are to be divided by 10 to obtain the equivalent in euro.

Marttiini 245 Finland

The 13 cm stainless steel blade has some scratches, but nothing bad. The edge is razor. The handle is perfect. L sheath leather had not seen any grease in a few years. A few repeated passages of a cream based on coconut oil and beeswax will make flexibility and appearance to this sheath.

Lapon knife

The range of traditional blade knives also includes models with a finger protection.

Traditionally, finger protectors are not part of the Scandinavian culture of knives, but in Central Europe, for example, finger protectors are usually installed on knives. A finger protector offers more security to the knife user. You can get a good hold of the knife and your hand will not slide on the blade even in wet or cold conditions. This lapon knife is an excellent generalist knife that is suitable for trappers and hunters alike.

The chrome-plated stainless steel blade has a beautiful engraving on the Lapland theme.

Where will he continue his life?

This new Finnish knife found its place outside, near the barbecue. Its stainless steel blade will be used to cut meat and fish, without special maintenance. I have the impression that he has experienced conditions far more extreme than what is expected... It is therefore without fear that he will face the whims of eastern France.

An indispensable part of the Finnish Arctic experience

The handle a knife puukko Never more than ten centimetres long. It is simple, without any guard or protection to prevent the hand from slipping. The blade of the knife is even shorter, straight but usually curved. The right back of the blade is also symbolic of simple life, but hard in the wild nature of the Finnish Arctic experience. The blade itself owes its distinctive appearance to the particular way in which it is created, using what is called the Scandinavian wheel — a flat, double-sided wheel with no secondary bevel, with a grinding angle of 17 to 19 degrees. This blade allows the user to gently remove the skin from the flesh.

Two puukkos Helle

The Sami manufacture their own hand tools, sculpting the handles their knives in reindeer wood. This traditional raw material, used here in the extreme north of Scandinavia for centuries, was an integral part of Sami life. However, since the late 1960s, only a few have mastered the art of working reindeer wood. But, if you're looking for a knife puukko extremely decorated, you will almost certainly find a place to buy a beautiful collectible. History of puukko

Making sound puukko Hey!

In this video, I make a knife puukko and one sheath From scratch. The blade is made of steel carbon 80CrV2. Before soaking, I normalized steel with three gas forging cycles. I used heated rapeseed oil for soaking. Then I soaked the blade at 200 degrees Celsius for two hours. This heat treatment should give a hardness of about 60 HRC. The handle of this puukko is made of curly birch, birch bark, ebony and a bronze mitre. The wood part of the sheath is in curly birch and walnut.
