Since prehistoric times, the Sami people of Arctic Europe have lived and worked in a region that extends to the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian peninsula of Kola. Traditionally, the Sami have pursued a variety of livelihoods, including inshore fishing and fur traps. Their best known means of subsistence is semi-nomadic reindeer rearing.
Time Is Passing
Time and equipment may have changed, but the knife still occupies a prominent place in Sami culture as an essential tool.
The Sami, living in the northernmost regions of Europe, have always enjoyed harmony with the surrounding nature. For them, the knife is a personal tool that has evolved over the years to become a very practical everyday object. Handcrafted by master blacksmiths, Sami knives are known for their sharpness and beauty. For the Lapons, the knife is also a symbol of social status, reflecting the role in the community. Women like men wear a knife or two. The most common material for Sami knives is wood and reindeer, rented for its ability to keep its shape for years. Here, a Sami craftsman expressed himself.
Duodji
The Duodji is the decorative art of the Sami peoples for everyday objects. Male objects, mainly of wood, horn or bone. Female objects, mainly of hides or of wood from roots.

The Sami craft, "Duodji" is practiced by many members of the community, making use of natural materials. The wood, the bark, as well as each part of the reindeer like the skin, the woods, and even the bones. Nothing is lost here, the Sami already had an eco-friendly lifestyle long before sustainability became the fashionable word that it is today.
